What to expect this week Jan 27-30

Good morning room 4,

I hope that everyone got a chance to enjoy the warm winter weather over the weekend and ready for a busy but short week! :)

ELA- We have decided to take a week to have a break from story writing, we are working on responding to journal prompts/writing about our opinions. We will also be beginning a new spelling list which will be sent home tonight, spelling test will happen today (ING family). In reading we are working on applying decoding skills (how we sound out words) to our spelling of unfamiliar words

Math- We are working on strategies for skip counting using coins as counters. We have been combining this understanding with our knowledge of addition to learn about ways which these skills can be used in the real world. We are currently earning 'Miss.Cox Cash' to spend at our class store next week. Check out how we have decided to earn or lose Miss.Cox Cash!

Science- We are continuing to explore hot and cold temperatures. We will be exploring ways of heating or cooling food and other items. As well as exploring the importance of  heating/cooling in our daily lives.

Social studies- This week we are exploring Inuit clothing and the adaptations that people in Iqaluit use to stay warm... this ties so well with our science unit!

Health- We are exploring strategies for calming our bodies/voices.

Art- This week we will continue perfecting out Ted Harrison art.

Reminder- No school Friday

January 22, 2019

Wow what an energetic week we have had so far!

Unfortunately we ran out of time to do our spelling test yesterday, so we will be having this today instead and new words will go home tonight.

On Monday we explored an online Inuit museum using the Ipads, we were looking for  observations and useful information we can use to create our window into Iqaluit.

Yesterday we continued working on our legends to go along with our beautiful Ted Harrison inspired art. We also continued working on our skip counting skills. We are learning to determine the number of times we have skip counted to get to a certain number.

Yesterday in science we had a group demonstration using ice cold water and boiling water to watch a thermometer change temperatures. We learned that the reason the temperature changes is because of the energy transfer from the water to the thermometer. Hot water molecules move fast and cold water molecules move slowly.

In social studies, we have learned that Iqaluit is cold and that they speak another language. We also learned that Inuksuk's are used to guide the way and mark a place.

Reminders:
- No school January 31, February 13,14,17
- Pillars of Care Assembly this Friday at 8:15 am
- Fun lunch tomorrow

Week overview Jan 20-24

Hello room 4,

I hope that everyone had a warm weekend! We are looking forward to a warmer week, this week.

A gentle reminder that if you are coming in late in the morning, dropping off your child in the school or looking to ask a question or chat in the morning or afternoon to please check in at the office first. Due to security protocols it is essential that you check in at the office prior to coming down to classrooms. It is also creating some chaos during ignite mornings when teachers are trying to count students entering the room and parents are standing at the door. We are ALWAYS more than willing to discuss any questions or meet with you before or after school, however, this needs to be done through the office.
Thank you for your understanding.

What to expect for the week:

Math- We will be looking at developing connections between repeated addition and skip counting. We will begin exploring a real life application for these skills by making connections to coins and counting money. We are building these skills to prepare for a special wrap up to our addition focus, a class store. After our store we will continue to explore addition strategies and make connections between addition and subtraction.
ELA- We are currently writing our own legends to go along with some beautiful art we have created in the style of Ted Harrison focused on painting arctic landscapes to tie to the introduction of our Inuit unit in social studies. Our buddies will support us in editing/refining our stories as well as with recording our stories to create audio recordings which we will link to our paintings through a QR code. We are hoping to have this art displayed at an area office art gallery.
Spelling test tomorrow and new lists today.
Guided reading groups have started.
Social Studies- We will begin creating our arctic landscape for our window to Iqaluit which will take the place of our previous window to Saskatoon. This week we will learn more about arctic landscapes, climate and landforms as well as, some interesting features of the Inuit culture/community.
Science- We will begin a number of experiments to enhance our understanding of hot and cold temperatures. We will also be taking a very exciting in school trip to our schools boiler room to see how our schools temperature is maintained.
Art- Take a look at the starts of our beautiful Arctic art from last week. We will continue to perfect this art, this week. We will also be working on our Window into Iqaluit

Health- We are going to be focusing on self regulation skills and continuing with mindfulness.

Update on last week and the week ahead

Good morning everyone, I hope that you are staying warm on this very chilly morning!

What an exciting week we had last week, everyone was so well behaved.

Last week we worked on circle stories based on the Lauren Numeroff series, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.

We also focused on how we can represent and add to a variety of numbers using multiple strategies.

We also did an exciting writing prompt based on the song, If I had a Million Dollars.

In science we began using a thermometer to track the weather outside and we finished up our magnetism toys.

Today was not our best day... some of us are having difficulties maintaining our voice levels and controlling our bodies, it is cold outside so it is understandable that we are wiggly so we are working on adding in more movement breaks into our day.

Today we started an author study on Michael Kusuguk an Inuit author. This is leading us into the Inuit social studies unit and writing personal narratives. We also started our skip counting unit to introduce us into adding money at the end of the month for a class store.

What to expect this week:
ELA: New spelling lists after our test tomorrow (last week was commonly misspelled words), Author story (see above), guided reading starts.
Math: Skip counting reviewed.
Social: Beginning Inuit finishing wrap up of prairie stories.
Science: We have started hot/cold temperatures.

Reminders:
New fun lunch online- Healthy hunger website
Math night- Feb. 6 - 6-8pm
Pajama day January 15

January 6, 2020

Welcome back Room 4! I am so glad to be back and I have missed everyone very much.

Today we started our day reviewing our basic facts and identifying a number of ways to add to 10. During this time we took time to chat with our classmates about our breaks so that once we were done our adding work we could share with the class and begin our winter break journals. After journaling we went to gym and then we used counters to determine how many counters we had and as many ways as possible to add up to that number. We finished our morning with word work centers. After lunch we began a new learning opportunity- we took 10 minutes after lunch to practice mindfulness. This is a school wide initiative to improve focus during the afternoons. We are practicing calming breathing. We also set new years resolutions for 2020 and finished the day with some time for Raz kids.

What to expect this week:
Math- We will be reviewing addition to refresh our memory of our work from before the term.
ELA- We are practicing various writing prompts to get back to our wonderful writing work, students will have a writing prompt task later this week to check in on our story writing progress. Spelling lists will go home tomorrow. Home reading begins again tomorrow.
Science- Please bring in your materials this week for the magnet project (recycled items). We are finishing up magnets and moving onto hot and cold temperature.
Social Studies- Finishing up prairies and moving into Inuit study.
Health- Reviewing class expectations, goal setting.
Art- We may begin our window to Iqaluit this week or next depending on Prairie wrap up.

Reminders:
- Please return report card envelopes :)

We have moved to google classroom

Hi everyone, Just a reminder to be checking google classroom regularly for updates, daily messages and classwork. Thanks, Miss.Cox
